Family support: seeking volunteers

Parenting young children can be a real challenge, and we’re aware that family wellbeing and adequate support are important issues in our community.  Many families are raising kids without extended family support, often thousands of miles away from whānau.  Parents can feel isolated, stressed, and their mental health can suffer.  That’s why Community Networks/LINK are developing a Family Support Programme - a volunteer-based service that offers practical support to parents of preschool age children in the Upper Clutha.

Volunteers will provide support to families in their own homes, offering companionship during difficult times and assisting with household tasks, all in the context of a confidential and non-judgmental relationship.

We’re pleased to now be at the pilot stage of this programme, which means we’re accepting referrals for families who might like the support and seeking volunteers to make it possible.  We’re looking for caring individuals wanting to make a difference who are patient, empathetic, non-judgemental and good communicators.

All volunteers must be over the age of 16, provide satisfactory references and undergo an induction programme.  For more information on this service, or to receive a volunteer application pack, please contact the Programme Coordinator, Joanna Perry, at info@link.org.nz or call 03 443 7799.

Anyone interested in this topic of family support and wellbeing is welcome to attend our Connection Café on Thursday, December 9th, 11:30-1:00pm at the Wānaka Community Hub.  This casual networking session will appeal to parents/caregivers, service providers and potential volunteers keen to know more about the activities, opportunities and services available for families with young children in the Upper Clutha.  Speakers will include Jo O’Connor (WellSouth), Kim Shaw and Katie Byrnes (Plunket), Alex Weehuizen (Precious Beginnings) and Kate Murray (Community Networks).

Morning tea is provided, and children are welcome!  For more info, visit our website.  Please register by emailing info@link.org.nz or calling 03 443 7799.
