Financial support for unexpected costs

Wānaka winters can be tough for anyone, but there is support available to help you keep warm and well. This month, we’re continuing our focus on practical winter support by highlighting the services available from providers in the Upper Clutha, such as Presbyterian Support Otago and Salvation Army, to help get you through the colder months.

When you or your family are struggling to make ends meet, household costs like heating can quickly become a low priority in the weekly budget. That’s why Presbyterian Support Otago (PSO) administers the Central Lakes Trust Heating Fund, a ‘last resort’ to help with one-off emergency wood supplies, gas bottle refills and power payments to keep their homes and families warm.

To access this fund, you must be a New Zealand citizen living within the Central Lakes area and engaged with a financial mentor. Community Networks can help you access confidential, non-judgemental guidance and support through a financial mentor with PSO’s Family Works, Central Otago Budgeting Services or Salvation Army.

As of July 2021, residents of the Upper Clutha can also access no and low-interest loans through PSO’s involvement in the Good Loans programme, a fair and affordable way for people living on limited incomes to purchase essential items such as second-hand cars; car repairs; new household appliances; computers; course costs; debt solution loans and medical expenses – while improving their long-term financial capability.
