Gaining a better level of control over your life
Wānaka winters can be tough for anyone, but there is support available to help you keep warm and well. This month, we’re continuing our focus on practical winter support by highlighting the services available from providers in the Upper Clutha, such as Presbyterian Support Otago and Salvation Army, to help get you through the colder months.
Salvation Army case worker Hannelie Potgieter is in Wānaka for appointments every Thursday between 11:00am and 3:00pm. She can offer individuals and families assistance with material needs – including household goods, clothing, linen and furnishings – as well as support in dealing with other agencies, like Work and Income or landlords.
“Our aim is to help you so you can gain a better level of control over your life,” says Hannelie. “We can also connect you to other Salvation Army and/or other social services in the area.”
Hannelie facilitates the Salvation Army’s Positive Lifestyle Programme, which helps participants to deal with things like depression, anger, grief, self-esteem and stress through 8 weekly one-hour sessions. You can contact her for more information by emailing: hannelie.potgieter@salvationarmy.org.nz.
Her colleague, financial mentor Sandra McClennan, offers free, confidential, non-judgmental advice, guidance and support. To find out more or book an appointment, email: sandra.mcclennan@salvationarmy.org.nz, or pop in to see Community Networks at the Wānaka Community Hub.
Finally, don’t forget that if you’re feeling anxious, down or just a bit overwhelmed, trained counsellors are available for you to talk to free of charge, 24 hours a day, when you call or text 1737.
